Product notes
Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal is a renowned producer and raiser of Setúbal fortified wines, owning very old vines of this variety located in the region’s finest terroirs. Until a few years ago, the Moscatel Roxo variety was a grape variety on the verge of extinction in the region. Given its high quality and the importance of preserving the regional heritage, Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal has encouraged the planting of Moscatel Roxo (4 ha).
Production notes
We have created a full-bodied wine from the 2017 vintage, which has been aged for at least five years. This vintage comes from certified vineyards planted on the slopes of the Serra da Arrábida, in the DO Setúbal Designated Region. The winemaking technique used is the one traditionally applied to DO Setúbal wines from this region: after a short fermentation of the must in contact with the skins, a selected wine spirit was added, which, by halting fermentation, allowed the natural sweetness of the grapes to be preserved. The wines from each harvest were kept, during the winter following the harvest, in contact with the skins, then racked (bleed). The solid masses were then pressed, and the wines were aged in 200-liter oak barrels that had previously contained whiskey, in a special cellar where there are significant temperature fluctuations.
Tasting notes
This wine has a deep topaz color and an intense, rich, and complex aroma, revealing floral notes of orange blossom and rose, as well as raisins, almonds, and honey. On the palate, the flavors mirror the aromas, carried by a well-balanced sweetness thanks to good acidity and a slight astringency—a harmonious blend of body, smoothness, and a lovely finish.
